At least from the perspective of Wolverine's character.
Hugh Jackman's tenure as Wolverine over the course of nine films and almost 17 years will go down in comic book cinematic history as one of the most committed portrayals in the genre.
So that leaves the franchise Wolverine-less-and in an uneasy sense, because moviegoers have been attuned to the face of only one Logan: Hugh Jackman. They apparently wanted to bring back Liev Schrieber's Sabretooth in Logan as a casino owner, but the idea didn't make it through the scripting stage. I thought Ryan made a lot out of his bit for it.
Granted, the biggest event in the movie is Logan's death (we're guessing this isn't even supposed to be a spoiler anymore). "I kept saying, 'Jim can we put that in?' and he goes 'Eh this is not that movie.' But anyway".
"Oh no there was a script stage".
However, Jackman went on to reveal that his fears proved unfounded, particularly given the way that X-24 was introduced to the audience: "When I saw the movie it's just clear, for some reason I think because he skewers Patrick Stewart in that moment the audience just sort of hates him. That idea was thrown around, I forgot about that". How long will it be until Fox recasts Logan?
He said previously: "It was always floated that Logan would possibly die". And yet, I know there's always a possibility that either we find a story, or a situation comes along where you think, 'OK, maybe we should consider that.' But at the moment, we're kind of leaving that alone. So the suit was one thing but we just couldn't work out how to do it, so if anyone can work that out you go for it. And I think by that point we'd created already the Wolverine that people wanted to see.
He recalled: "He said, 'Are you sort of walking amusing, what's going on?' And I said, 'I've been doing this thing with wolves, ' and he goes, 'You know you're not a wolf, right?' I said, 'Well, there's no such thing as a wolverine.' And he said; 'Go to the zoo, dude.' I literally didn't know it existed". His birthday present was just a beating and that's the only time he sees him (laughs).
