Now new reports from the Detroit medical examiner have determined the cause of death to be a suicide, according to Associated Press, though a full autopsy has not yet been turned over.
Mere hours before he took his own life, Cornell sang one last time with Soundgarden at Detroit's Fox Theater, and the band was scheduled to perform in Columbus, Ohio later in the week at the Rock on the Range Festival. She called a family friend who ultimately forced his way into the room and discovered Cornell on the bathroom floor. Even up against Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam's voice in their duet on the contemplative and delicately brooding "Hunger Strike" as the supergroup Temple of the Dog, Cornell more than holds his own.
Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Mudhoney were among the most high-profile bands to come out of Seattle and dominated the pop culture landscape of the early and mid-1990s.
Tributes continue to flow for Cornell, who was a leading figure in the 90s grunge music scene as the head of Soundgarden, and later moving on to work with super-group Audioslave. In 2011, Cornell was ranked ninth on the Rolling Stone list of the best lead singers of all-time, selected by its readers.
His first solo album, 1999's "Euphoria Morning", was a dark album that was initially supposed to be titled "Euphoria Mourning".
Sir Elton posted a picture of Cornell on Instagram, with the caption: "Shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Chris Cornell".
"The "no such thing as nothing" line comes from the concepts that humans don't really have a flat line until we're dead". If a person doesn't have enough food, they actually are hungry.
The music industry mourned his sudden death online.
Cornell was roommates with Andrew Wood, lead singer of the Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990.
"Seattle's son, Chris Cornell, has passed away", DJ John Richards told listeners.
