Militants opened fire at security forces in a village in Tral township of south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Saturday, police said. However no was injured in the attack.
There was no immediate report of any casualty, he said, adding that a cordon and search operation has been launched to track them.
The firing comes days after a Kashmiri army officer was killed by militants in Shopian when he was on leave to attend a family wedding.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and a combing operation is on.
The state authorities on Saturday ordered all schools and educational institutions in the border belts of the Rajouri district to remain shut in the wake of ceasefire violation and firing and shelling from the Pakistani side along the LoC. Escape routes were sealed off in an attempt to capture the militants, the police claimed.
