During the actor's speech, Ferrell charted his journey from a USC freshman in 1986 to the Groundlings to Saturday Night Live to box office success.
"I've already instructed my wife and my children from this point they have to address me as Dr Ferrell, no exceptions", he said.
Having received a bachelor's degree in sports information in 1990 from the Californian university, Will knew he did not want to pursue a career in sports broadcasting shortly following his graduation and followed his instinct to pursue a career in comedy.
"I wasn't extremely confident that I would succeed, and after moving back to L.A., I would sit down to a meal of spaghetti topped with mustard with only $20 in my checking account", he said. Ferrell was awarded an honorary degree, along with Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren, AIDS researcher David D. Ho, social work pioneer Suzanne Dworak-Peck, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and inventor and surgeon Gary K. Michelson.
