Melania Trump, who was standing next to the president along with their son Barron during the annual White House Easter egg roll on Monday, had to nudge her husband to cross his hand over his heart as a military band and singer launched into the anthem.

"We will be a stronger nation than ever and we are on the right track", he said from the semicircular balcony of the White House overlooking the south garden of the residence.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks with children as they make Easter greeting cards for members of the military at the 139th annual White House Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington.

The search for Easter eggs is one of the most emblematic traditions of the federal capital, established in 1878 by President Rutherford B. Hayes. "We're right on track", Trump said according to a report by the NBC News.

Apparently the crowd was smaller than in past years, but that was apparently largely due to the shortage of White House staff to host the event, positions the Trumps have yet to fill.

"On behalf of the president and (our son) Barron, we wish you great fun and attractive days coming ahead of us", Xinhua news agency quoted the first lady as saying.

The White House's 139th Easter Egg Roll on Monday (17 April) saw 21,000 children and adults attend the festivities, officials said. He, Melania and Barron also joined kids at a table to colour cards to send to US service members. Moments later, Trump blew a whistle three times, each time sending youngsters scurrying to use a wooden spoon to maneuver a dyed egg across a finish line.

Either way, it seems Mrs Trump will be a tremendous asset to her husband when she leaves her home in NY to join him in Washington.

President Trump's older sons, Don Jr. and Eric, and their wives, and daughter Tiffany also attended.

Costumed characters roaming the grounds included Elmo from Sesame Street, Dr Seuss's Cat in the Hat and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
