Dave Chappelle Doesn't Hate Key & Peele, It Just Hurt His Feelings

Regolare Commento Stampare

Ahead of the release of his new standup specials at Netflix, Dave Chappelle recently met up with Gayle King for a lengthy CBS This Morning interview that aired today, which covers everything from his decision to walk away from Chappelle's Show to living in a small OH town to how his thoughts on standup, fame, and spending more time on himself and his family have evolved over the years.

Dave Chappelle says that while he's a "fan" of erstwhile sketch comedy show Key & Peele, a lack of credit he received for its success has hurt his feelings. But in your mind you're like, "That b**** is insane".

Chappelle's Show ended in 2006, over ten years ago, after just three seasons. "I'm not goin' back'". Over the course of his multi-decade career - and certainly in the years immediately following his infamous departure from Comedy Central in 2005 - Chappelle has maintained a relatively low profile as far as interviews go.

Chappelle is in the midst of a comeback, having hosted "Saturday Night Live" in 2016 and performing for an upcoming three-part Netflix stand-up special. At the end of the day, ultimately I feel good about what I did.

"I think there was a speculation that Dave doesn't like Key & Peele or Dave thinks, 'Okay, '" King said.

I took the Dave Chappelle detour. I didn't know him that well, but the times that we hung out were fun and very memorable and often amusing. "I watched one of these nature shows one time, and they were talking about how a Bushman finds water when it's scarce", he said. And I fought the network very hard so that those conventions could come to fruition. "I found a way that - to do what I liked to do and avoid some of the parts of it that I was uncomfortable with", he said. "You just try to conduct yourself as best you can".

While he was away, he regained his physical and mental strength.

"I've been all over the country, touring all my life". Now I've seen everything. Now I've seen everything. I didn't know this, apparently baboons love salt. "And I think it's awesome that the millennials and younger people may have gotten reintroduced to Prince through a comedy sketch". I had time to stop if someone said they like me. "It's like - it was just, like, the way that I engaged the world was different".
