Trump's White House was also called out during the hearing for sending tweets about the hearing that Comey deemed inaccurate in real time.
The House committee will hold a second public hearing on March 28 with former US officials, including former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former CIA Director John Brennan. Fox News knows of no evidence of any kind, that the now president of the United States was surveilled at any time, in any way. Trump wrote at 6:30 a.m. ET, adding, "The Democrats made up and pushed the Russian story as an excuse for running a awful campaign. Must find leaker now!"
The ongoing hearing has largely split across partisan lines, with Democrats focusing on issues of Russian interference and Republicans questioning Comey and National Security Agency head Michael S. Rogers about how scary and bad leaks are. Trump tweeted early Monday as news coverage on the Russian Federation allegations dominated the morning's cable news. In fact, they said the opposite: that Russian Federation did meddle in the election specifically to help get Trump elected.
They argue the focus of the probe should be ferreting out who leaked classified information.
The claims have riveted the American public for weeks, and the stakes for the tycoon-turned-president could hardly be higher.
US investigators say Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the hacking into the computers at the Democratic National Committee.
Trump and his team have been continuously focused on how information about alleged ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation have come out.
"If we're going to protect the country, we need to know exactly what the Russians did, how they did it, how to protect ourselves, how to protect our European allies who are facing elections right now that the Russians are interfering in".
He said that the FBI's investigation would also look into whether any crimes were committed.
"There was circumstantial evidence of collusion; there is direct evidence, I think, of deception", Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said on NBC's "Meet the Press".
"Was there a physical wiretap of Trump Tower?"
On March 4, Trump tweeted that Obama had "tapped" his phone, and last week the White House, citing news reports, suggested that Britain's GCHQ signals intelligence agency had helped at Obama's bidding.
Those claims sparked anger in London, where GCHQ, a close partner of USA spy agencies, branded the allegation "utterly ridiculous".
When asked about the intelligence community's responsibility to correct false reporting, Comey said, "There's a whole lot out there that is false".
"I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election", Comey told the House intelligence committee.
"I have no information that supports those tweets, and we have looked carefully inside the FBI", Comey said Monday. Trump fired Flynn, his former national security adviser, last month after he failed to disclose contacts with Russia's ambassador before Trump took office.
Flynn later admitted talking to the ambassador about U.S. relations with Russia just as the Obama administration was slapping punitive new sanctions and expelling three dozen Russian officials over the election interference.
Trump's next two tweets showed video of the pair of intelligence officials discussing leaks, which Trump and Republicans on the intelligence committee repeatedly condemned as illegal and risky.
