Has the Wrong Winner Ever Been Called at the Oscars Before?

Tom Jones had become the first film in history to get three Best Supporting Actress nominations at the 36th Academy Awards.

In archival footage unearthed in the wake of Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway's monumental mishap, Davis Jr.is seen reading the nominees for Best Music Score that year.

The cringe-worthy moment came after he read out all six nominees for the category, but then announced John Addison for the film Tom Jones as the victor.

And it forced a producer to run in from the background and give Sammy the correct envelope to quickly rectify the mistake and name Andre Previn the rightful victor.

"Wait till the NAACP hears about this", he joked as the right envelope was brought out.

"The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, (the mistake) was immediately corrected".

Fortunately, Davis Jr.'s mistake, while still pretty embarrassing, was nowhere near as monumentally tragic as last night's La La Land/Moonlight drama, because Tom Jones wasn't even nominated in that particular category.

After some hesitant applause died down ― and Davis realized the mistake ― he jumped back to the podium to address the blunder. "We are now investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred", the company said.
