After a short run by Ohio State running back Curtis Samuel in the first quarter, Clemson defensive lineman Christian Wilkins reached down while Samuel was face-down on the ground, put his hand in between his legs, and appeared to grab Samuel's butt/groin/crotch region.
Wilkins's apology following Clemson's big win didn't stop people from sounding off on the groping incident.
"Is it really that big of a deal?" It's just we play football together for hours and hours every day, in the locker room, bored.
"I did it against USC where the dude tweeted it", Boulware said.
"Would you rather me poke you in the belly button or grab your butt, rather than me stomp on your ankle or kick you in the area?" he said.
But while Swinney and Wilkins both glossed over the incident and didn't elaborate, Clemson senior linebacker Ben Boulware was highly outspoken Wednesday morning, expressing that too much was made of what he sees as a non-issue. I've never done it as aggressive as Christian did it. It's just part of the game, they said, but maybe it shouldn't be. It's gained some unwanted attention. It is what it is. He needs to be more discreet about it.
"People are trying to say 'sexual assault.' People that say that have either never played football (or) have never been in a locker room and seen the weird stuff".
Boulware spoke more on the subject, according to Sports Illustrated's Brian Hamilton, giving the old, "If you didn't do it, it's because you were LAME" speech this time around, which is very on-brand for him. Yes, Christian went - he went about four fingers deep. "I just poked him in the butt".
"I know there's going to be that one person (who says), 'Well, I played football and I never did that.' You either (stunk) at football, you had no friends in the locker room, or you were the person that went in the bathroom stall to go change because you were scared to shower with the team".
Yep. Sure did. I mean, I think he said it best.
"Just being goofy, you guys know Christian". He's a guy that can be a little silly at times. We don't have a better young man on the team than Christian Wilkins. He apologized for it, apologized to the kid, that's really it.
The national title game is still five days away and we've already been gifted an exiled, in-denial Lane Kiffin and ButtGate. "It's stuff you do when you're competing, and I know that's not a good look".
