During the arrest, police said, the suspect fell and complained of an alleged injury.
"The suspect grabbed medical personnel, armed himself with scissors, made threats to the medical personnel and to our officer, which led to the officer actually shooting the suspect", Smith said in a press conference.
According to Ocala police, the suspect was arrested in connection with a robbery at the Bank of America on State Road 40.
Police said the suspect ignored an officer's verbal commands and threatened medical staff and the officer with the scissors.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement officials is investigating an officer-involved shooting early Thursday morning at Ocala Regional Medical Center.
The man is expected to survive.
Hospital staffers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Police say he didn't follow the officer's orders before he was shot. The suspect remains hospitalized recovering from a gunshot wound and will be transported into the Marion County Jail once he is released.
