But just seven hours before his arrest, in a freakish move, Mckane went to a Bexar county courthouse to get married on the run. At about 7 am on Sunday morning, Otis Tyrone McKane walked through the front doors of the San Antonio Police Department Public Safety Headquarters, a fortress-like complex at the corner of Santa Rosa and Cesar Chavez that houses administrative and investigative offices for both the local police and fire departments.

McKane allegedly fled the scene and Marconi was pronounced dead later at a hospital. Police say they don't know the motive behind the fatal shooting of Marconi. Video of McKane following his arrest was posted to their official Facebook account.

Fields and an unidentified 2-year-old child were in the vehicle at the time of the arrest, Mysanantonio.com reported, though police did not confirm that to PEOPLE.

"I've been through several custody battles, and I was upset at the situation I was in, and I lashed out at someone who didn't deserve it", McKane said. He told reporters that he was angry with the court system for not letting him see his son and took it out on Detective Benjamin Marconi. Dotson said the 19-year-old had known that police officers were closing in and had lashed out in an attack against a man in uniform.

"He was a great father, he was a great officer", Naylor told NBC, adding that Marconi had two children from past marriages as well as grandchildren.

One-third of police officers shot to death on the job this year were purposely targeted by their assailant, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

A St. Louis police officer was shot and wounded Sunday night. Several witnesses told police they saw McKane pull up behind Marconi's police cruiser and approach the drivers side door as the officer sat inside, writing a traffic citation. Meanwhile, a cop in Sanibel, Florida, was shot in the shoulder during a traffic stop but was treated and released, CBS reports.

Marconi, a 20-year veteran on the force, was ambushed outside police headquarters Sunday evening while writing a traffic ticket inside his squad auto. McKane and a woman obtained the license at the Bexar County Courthouse just before 10 a.m. Monday - after the shooting, but before his arrest.

McManus said no officers were in the building at the time, but he declined to elaborate on the interaction, citing the ongoing investigation. She also reportedly owns the white Buick the suspect was driving at the time of his arrest.
