Two men have been rushed to a trauma centre this afternoon following a shooting in The Annex neighbourhood and the investigation is now in the hands of the Special Investigations Unit.

The shooting took place near Bedford Road and Prince Arthur Avenue Tuesday afternoon around 3:30 p.m.

Toronto lawyer Clayton Ruby told Global News he believed J. Randall Barrs, whose website said he is a criminal defence lawyer with a "national reputation" in "high profile drug and murder cases", was shot outside his law office.

Barrs has tried significant cases such as representing seven men in 2004 who ran one of the largest marijuana grow operations in Canada out of an old Molson brewery in Barrie, Ont. The two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries, an official with Toronto Paramedics Services said. An unnamed source told CTV Toronto that a suspect was shot by Halton police officers after he shot Barrs.

The SIU investigates police shootings in the province, along with all circumstances involving police that result in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
