A 33-year-old Hatch Police officer has died after he was shot during a routine traffic stop Friday afternoon.

Jesse Hanes, a 38-year-old man from OH, is suspected of shooting officer Chavez on Friday as he was preparing the paperwork during the traffic stop in the village of Hatch, about 40 miles northwest of Las Cruces.

County authorities say that Hanes and Nelson have murder charges in OH, and the other male in the auto is considered a witness at this time.

The manhunt came to an end, as police were able to flatten the vehicles tires using stop sticks and "coax" the driver out of the vehicle.

The slain officer was Jose Chavez, 33, a two-year veteran of the Hatch Police Department.

Chaves had just arrived at the traffic stop when the suspect got out of the vehicle and fired shots. The driver's condition is unknown.

A different officer, also responding to the traffic stop, saw it all as the suspects took off. After about 25 minutes, having lost their pursuers, they attempted to steal a red Chevrolet Cruze SUV after shooting its owner. They said the carjacking victim was recovering in a hospital. Their actions prompted a massive response from several New Mexico law enforcement jurisdictions.

Hanes was arrested after crashing into a pile of firewood around 5 p.m., police said, adding that he had a gunshot wound on his thigh that appeared to be self-inflicted.

Hanes' two passengers also were arrested.

She said the shooting sparked a multi-agency response, with officers from several police departments throughout the county setting up checkpoints on Interstate 25 and on Highway 187.

Hanes and Nelson are wanted in OH in the July 25 shooting death of a 62-year-old man just outside Chillicothe, about 60 miles south of Columbus.

Meanwhile, other police officers' team tracked down the other two suspects when a citizen called 911 to report the presence of two men "acting suspicious" in the area.

Nelson and Hanes, are accused of killing 62-year-old Theodore Timmons in July.

The investigation into the shooting of Chavez is ongoing.
