Seven people were killed and at least 47 more people - including a 7-year-old girl - were wounded in shootings across the city between Friday evening and Monday morning, according to Chicago police.
In one 14-hour span beginning Saturday afternoon, 25 people were shot - which police said is the equivalent of one person being shot every 33 minutes, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Just before 3 a.m.in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, a 25-year-old man got into an argument at a house party in the 7000 block of South Artesian and someone shot him in the head, police said. Friends and family at the scene identified him as Darius Brownlee. Shots rang out, and he was found with a gunshot wound to the head on the front lawn of the residence. "He would help anybody". He had been shot at a different location before returning home to tell his family what happened, police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. Officers found a 30-year-old Lynn man with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper left leg and buttock.
At 6:50 p.m. Saturday evening, state troopers chased and shot at a auto suspected of being stolen, leaving a boy wounded.
- An 8-year-old girl was shot Sunday night in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.
Chicago police told the DNAinfo.com website that the victim was standing on the sidewalk along North Harding Avenue when someone shot him from a passing vehicle.
The boy was taken to Loyola Hospital in critical condition, police said.
Numerous gunshot victims from this weekend are young. They were in the 1200 block of North Parkside Avenue when they were shot.
The boy was rushed to St. Francis Hospital. No arrests have been made.
The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds, police said. He was later transferred to Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized.
Police said the man is a documented gang member. He was listed in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to his foot.
Police said the shooting was gang-related. The two men pulled out a handgun and shot the man in his stomach area when he tried to flee. He was taken to Salem Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Lynn Police Lt. David Brown said.
Of all major USA cities, Chicago has seen the largest increase in homicides this year.
