Britain bumps Netherlands from field hockey gold • Britain stunned the top-ranked Netherlands in a shootout to win its first-ever gold medal in women's field hockey. She is also the first African-American to play Olympic water polo for the U.S. women. They've won every major global tournament their sport has to offer over the last two years, justifying their No. 1 world ranking.

Captain Maggie Steffens won her second consecutive MVP award based on her play in Rio, as voted by the media members who had been following the women's game.

Eight of the 13 players on the USA roster are under 23 years old.

With the victory, USA women's water polo claimed their second straight Olympic gold, becoming the first ever to repeat the feat.

"Italy's great, and have a lot of experience", Steffens told reporters.

His team-mate Sergio Santos, one of the longest serving players in the Brazil team, who was part of the team that had won gold at Athens 2004, was delighted to be able to announce his retirement with another gold.

Tania Di Mario is the inspirational leader of the Italians.

The United States initially appeared to claim the bronze medal, but upon further review, a botched baton handoff disqualified the team. It was also the Olympics' first all-European final.

Italy's Giulia Gorlero has been just as strong, if not stronger. She's stopped 56 shots and has a 65 percent save percentage. Britain goalie Maddie Hinch did not allow a goal in the shootout.

They didn't make it look easy. It's as much of a mental challenge as it is a physical challenge. It would have been very selfish of me to let what happened to me personally effect this group. I watched a little bit of their semifinal and I saw how well they were shooting the ball from the outside.

To prevail here, the tight-knit team had to play through tragedy. "Every player, every athlete, every coach that arrive in Olympic Games want to arrive to this dream".

On Arianna Garibotti: "Arianna is a quality player".
