Oakland Raiders fans wear costumes in the crowd against the Arizona Cardinals during a preseason game at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Carr marched the Raiders to a score in his second series, as Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 53-yard field goal, culminating a drive covering 29 yards in seven plays. A team spokesman confirmed after the game that it was a hip injury and Edwards left the locker room in crutches. There were nerves, but they calmed quickly after Joseph got back in rhythm. Then he showed off the player Raiders coaches think he could be.
George Atkinson III inserted himself into the conversation at running back with touchdown runs of 53 and 35 yards, although DeAndre Washington looks the part as the complementary back for Latavius Murray.
Edwards was hurt in a crushing collision with Cardinals running back Chris Johnson at the line of scrimmage.
"Joe Hansley made a great block, cut the crap out of that guy", Atkinson said, "and kind of sprung me going to the outside and use my speed".
"Compared to a year ago, obviously we're better", said Carr, the former Fresno State star.
Though the first team offense was rusty and the starter defense had issues too, we have to be VERY pleased with how the first preseason game looked overall. And there is probably still a need to consider bringing in a veteran backup tackle.
When receiver Johnny Holton recovered the fumble caused by linebacker Korey Toomer, seconds after punter Marquette King sent a booming punt 47 yards downfield, the frenetic pace of the off-season mumbo jumbo stopped. The key play was Carr's 22-yard pass to Michael Crabtree on third and four. The Raiders also have steady veterans Seth McRoberts and Andre Holmes (third and fourth in receiving touchdowns a year ago with nine combined), so it's possible a number of Del Rio's cuts come at the expense of young wide outs. Second-year tackle D.J. Humphries had his hands full with Khalil Mack but eventually got help from David Johnson. He was solid in run-blocking, but struggled some against the pass rush Friday.
With Joseph not expected to play, he also becomes the highest of Oakland's draft picks to suit up and could play a couple extra series more than most starters because of the way the Raiders rotate on the defensive line.
The Cardinals will play the Chargers in San Diego on Friday night and Christian expects to get substantial playing time again. He was beaten several times, including on the Holmes' TD. If you don't have the work ethic in today's National Football League with all the work that's required, I think you're going to have a hard time. They're both extremely heavy sweaters and they'll lose eight pounds in a practice and as they fatigue, their technique goes to (expletive).
Christian was credited with a quarterback hit on a fourth-quarter blitz, but he wasn't credited with a pass defended when he broke up a first-quarter throw into the end zone intended for Oakland's Marcel Reece.
"He's a good football player and he works at it", said Del Rio. "At the end of the day, I'm just trying to make sure I'm fully 100 percent ready for that first game".
Arians said defensive back Tyrann Mathieu (knee), cornerback Justin Bethel (foot) and defensive lineman Frostee Rucker (foot) - could come off the physically unable to perform list in the coming week but only for walk-throughs.
